BOB EDER

I'm glad to be part of the Fisher Poets because it's a chance to celebrate this culture and celebrate the oceans -- these huge and wild spaces that nourish us body and spirit.

—Bob Eder

Bob Eder started commercial fishing two days after receiving a B.A. in Aesthetic Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz in 1973. As a deckhand on a salmon troller, he sought work and experience that he could write about. He's been an Oregon-based fisherman ever since, consumed by what was to have been his subject matter. Bob figures he's spent somewhere between five and six thousand days at sea, ranging off the coast from San Francisco to Alaska. He's fished professionally for halibut, shrimp, tuna, herring, and salmon, but has focused on using habitat-friendly, species-specific trap gear to capture sablefish and Dungeness crab.
